History
The building of what is known today as the Hotel D`Orangerie in Maastricht was established as a hotel and ale-house as long ago as 1742. An original gable stone can still be found in one of the hotel rooms (Room 26). During the year in which the hotel was created as it stands today, Georg Friedrich Händel composed the messiah’s oratory and in Frankfurt, Kurfürst Karl Albert von Bayern was elected as Emperor Karl VII. At the beginning of the 1930s, the house was purchased by a renowned antiquary and his family. The current owner, Yolanda Lutgens, bought the property in 1992 and spent the following two years reconverting the building into a hotel. The result was very satisfying: today the Hotel D`Orangerie boasts 16 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a garden with a terrace. In 1996 the adjacent building became part of Hotel D`Orangerie, adding six additional rooms including a honeymoon suite.
