History
In 1905 the tradesman Wilhelm Heyer from Cologne commissioned the architect Carl Moritz to build a museum of musical history in Cologne. The magnificent building was built in the neo-classical style with strict art nouveau decorative forms. In 1913 the museum opened with one of the most important collections in Europe: 2,600 instruments, 1,700 music autographs, 4,000 portraits of musicians, almost 20,000 letters by great masters and bibliophilic one-offs. In 1926 the private collection was moved to Leipzig, today it can be found in the music instrument museum of the University of Leipzig.
In 1988 the building was revised for use as a hotel. The building was restored under strict observation of the protection of historical monuments principles and the “Viktoria” hotel opened its doors for the first time in 1989.
