History
Built in 1245 by Count Diether V. von Katzenelnbogen the Rheinfels fortress has become the most important fortress along the Rhine over the course of the centuries. In the 16th and 17th century it was developed into a fortress. The fortress experienced a “militant climax” in 1692 when Ludwig XIV’s troops attempted in vein to capture it: as the only castle on the left-bank of the Rhine it did not fall into the hands of the French. Around 1795 the barbicans, keep and Darmstadt construction were all blown up.
The castle hotel was established in 1973 on the walls of the “new casemates” of the Rheinfels castle. All buildings were professionally restored with a lot of love of detail and observing the historical monument protection principles.
